The Safina Party has ushered in a new era of leadership after businessman and political strategist Jimi Wanjigi officially took over from Senior Counsel Paul Muite, who has led the party for years. The transition was marked in a colorful event that brought together party supporters, political observers, and members of the media.
In his farewell remarks, Paul Muite praised the resilience of the party since its founding in 1995, noting that it had stood firm in advocating for democracy and justice during some of Kenya’s most turbulent political moments.
“Safina has always been a voice for democracy, rule of law, and fairness. It is time for a new generation of leadership to carry this torch forward,” Muite said as he formally handed over the reins to Wanjigi.
Wanjigi, making a dramatic entrance amid cheers and chants from his supporters, declared that the party was entering a new phase of renewal, with a mission to place ordinary citizens at the center of governance.
“The people of Kenya have suffered from leadership that puts the interests of a few above the needs of the majority. Safina under my stewardship will be a people’s party, driven by fairness, opportunity, and accountability,” he stated.
He went on to criticize what he termed the failures of the current administration, pointing to the economic hardships faced by Kenyans.
“We cannot continue down a path where the government burdens citizens while offering no solutions. The rising debt, the high cost of living, and lack of jobs for our youth are symptoms of failed leadership. Safina will be at the forefront of offering alternatives that restore dignity to the people,” Wanjigi said.
The businessman-turned-politician outlined key focus areas for the party moving forward, including economic empowerment, protection of democratic freedoms, and reforms in public service delivery. He also promised to embark on a grassroots mobilization campaign to strengthen Safina’s presence nationwide in preparation for the 2027 elections.
“We will build a movement that speaks to the struggles of every Kenyan from the farmer in the village to the young graduate in the city. Safina will not be about rhetoric; it will be about solutions,” he emphasized.
In his closing remarks, Wanjigi struck a unifying tone, calling for Kenyans to rise above divisions and work together for the common good.
“Kenya cannot continue to be divided along tribal and partisan lines. Our politics must be about ideas, not ethnicity. Safina will unite Kenyans under one vision a vision of equity, justice, and opportunity for all,” he said to loud applause.
The leadership change marks a significant moment in Kenya’s political landscape, with Safina now seeking to rebrand itself under Wanjigi’s high-profile leadership. Analysts suggest the move could inject fresh energy into the party, which has at times struggled to remain visible in the competitive multiparty environment.
Party loyalists expressed optimism that the new leadership would reinvigorate Safina. One supporter remarked:
“We believe Wanjigi has the resources, the ideas, and the courage to take this party to the next level. This is the fresh start we have been waiting for.”
As the chants of “Safina! Safina!” filled the air, Wanjigi’s assumption of leadership signaled not only a change of guard but also a bold attempt to position the party as a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 elections. The coming months will reveal whether Safina can turn this renewed momentum into tangible political gains and deliver on its promise of people-centered reforms.
