The Principal Secretary for Industry in the State Department for Industry, Dr. Juma Mukhwana, has called on Kenyan youth to take up opportunities in manufacturing, technology and innovation, saying they are central to the country’s economic future.

Speaking during the 19th Career Week at Kenyatta University, Dr. Mukhwana said Kenya is at a critical stage in its industrial growth and young people must be ready to play a leading role.

He praised the university for linking students with industry, noting that such platforms help learners understand real workplace demands.

“This career week connects learning with real life,” he said, adding that universities must work closely with industry to prepare graduates for the changing job market.

Dr. Mukhwana noted that modern industries require new skills, urging students to explore areas such as artificial intelligence, software engineering, networking and industrial automation.

“Our factories are becoming smarter and more automated. We need young people who can run these systems,” he said.

He dismissed claims that manufacturing is declining, saying the sector is the second-largest employer after government, with about 500,000 jobs, and that two to three new factories open every week.

Citing the Kirinyaga County Aggregation and Industrial Park, which attracted 68 investors for just eight spaces, he said this shows strong confidence in Kenya’s manufacturing sector.

Dr. Mukhwana added that manufacturing contributes nearly 10 per cent to Kenya’s GDP and offers great potential through value addition to products such as milk, tea, avocado and macadamia.

Students explore career opportunities in manufacturing and technology at Kenyatta University.

He urged students to think beyond job-seeking and focus on creating solutions and businesses.

“This is Kenya’s time to grow through industry. This is your time to dream big and help change the country,” he said.
