FEMNET4GTE AFRICA REGIONAL ACTION WORKSHOP TO DRIVE COLLECTIVE ACTION ON GENDER TRANSFORMATIVE EDUCATION
The Feminist Network for Gender Transformative Education (FemNet4GTE) today convened its Africa Regional Action Workshop at the Pan Pacific Hotel, Wetlands, Nairobi, bringing together more than 50 diverse stakeholders committed to advancing education as a tool for justice, empowerment, and gender equality.
The two-day workshop, held on August 26–27, is part of a global series of regional convenings across Africa, Latin America, Asia-Pacific, and the Middle East aimed at shaping strategies and action plans that place gender equality at the heart of education. Since 2022, FemNet4GTE has united more than 210 organizations, experts, and government representatives into an intergenerational movement working to transform education systems globally.
Opening the Nairobi meeting, a FemNet4GTE regional coordinator emphasized that education remains central to addressing long-standing injustices: “Education has the extraordinary power not only to transform lives but also to address structural injustices that African girls and women face every day. This workshop is about turning commitments into action across the continent.”
Representing the African Union, Dr. Amina Diop of the AU Education, Science, Technology and Innovation Department, underscored the alignment with continental priorities: “Our collaboration with FemNet4GTE ensures that strategies such as CESA 2026–2035 are not just documents but living frameworks that respond to the realities of girls and young women across Africa.”
Key Highlights from Day One
- Policy Influence: Delegates discussed how to integrate gender-transformative approaches into the forthcoming Continental Education Strategy for Africa (CESA 2026–2035).
- National Action Plans: Several governments shared their ongoing gender equality action plans, with participants exploring ways to strengthen them with FemNet4GTE insights.
- Best Practices: Civil society groups and community-led organizations presented approaches to tackling school-related gender-based violence, increasing girls’ retention, and ensuring disability inclusion.
- Youth Leadership: Young feminist activists led sessions bridging the gap between activism and policymaking, calling for accountability and stronger youth representation.
The workshop also provided space for wellness and solidarity, reinforcing FemNet4GTE’s values of intergenerational collaboration, feminist self-care, and shared power.
The outcomes of the Nairobi convening will inform both national and regional advocacy efforts, feeding into key continental influencing moments such as the AU’s Gender is My Agenda Campaign (GIMAC) and global forums including the UN General Assembly later this year. An outcome document capturing the recommendations will be disseminated for continued advocacy and follow-up.
By centering evidence, solidarity, and feminist values, FemNet4GTE’s Africa Regional Action Workshop is expected to spark collective action to ensure that gender equality in and through education remains a central part of the post-2030 development agenda.
