LARA AFRICA UNVEILS KENYA’S TOP PERFORMING GOVERNORS, SENATORS, AND WOMEN REPRESENTATIVES IN 2025

A new nationwide survey by Lara Africa, a leading research and policy think tank, has ranked Kenya’s top-performing governors, senators, and women representatives, spotlighting leaders making the most significant impact in their counties.
The survey, conducted in August 2025 across all 47 counties, gathered citizens’ views on governance, service delivery, and accountability. According to Joy Wambui, a data analyst at Lara Africa, the findings “reflect how Kenyans feel about their leadership and their willingness to echo public understanding of accountability and progress.”
Top Performing Governors
The rankings placed Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata at the top with a performance score of 72.8%, recognized for his healthcare reforms and social welfare programs.
- Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku followed closely with 70.6%, lauded for infrastructure expansion and water projects.
- Kisii Governor Simba Arati secured third place at 68.5%, credited for bold initiatives in agriculture and youth empowerment.
Other governors in the top tier included:
- Jonathan Bii (Uasin Gishu) – 65.9%
- Gladys Wanga (Homa Bay) – 65.2%
- Fernandes Barasa (Kakamega) – 64.8%
Governor Kang’ata’s flagship Kang’ata Care medical insurance scheme, covering over 160,000 vulnerable individuals, was widely cited by respondents. In Kajiado, Governor Ole Lenku earned praise for upgrading Kajiado Referral Hospital and expanding water distribution projects, while Governor Arati won accolades for establishing an avocado processing plant, cold storage facility, and county-wide water improvement projects.
Top Performing Senators
The Senate rankings placed Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna in the top spot, commended for his active legislative role and strong public representation. He was followed by:
- Aaron Cheruiyot (Kericho)
- Tom Ojienda (Kisumu)
- John Methu (Nyandarua)
- Richard Onyonka (Kisii)
- Wahome Wamatinga (Nyeri)
- Moses Kajwang’ (Homa Bay)
The senators were celebrated for championing county development, enhancing oversight, and steering parliamentary debates on national equity.
Top Performing Women Representatives
The survey also spotlighted women leaders, with the top three performers being:
- Hon. Betty Maina (Murang’a)
- Hon. Jane Kagiri (Laikipia)
- Hon. Ruth Odinga (Kisumu)
They were recognized for grassroots empowerment initiatives, healthcare advocacy, and youth mentorship programs, earning praise for their transformative community impact.
