The Government of Kenya, working in partnership with the World Bank, has begun rolling out the National Youth Opportunities Towards Advancement (NYOTA) project, a five-year initiative designed to uplift vulnerable young people by creating jobs, expanding incomes, and promoting a culture of savings across the country.

The ambitious project targets more than 800,000 youth between the ages of 18 and 29, and up to 35 years for Persons with Disabilities, with a strong focus on those with limited formal education and restricted access to economic opportunities. Spread across all 1,450 wards nationwide, NYOTA is expected to have a wide-reaching impact, laying the foundation for sustainable youth economic empowerment.

Earlier today, the project marked a key milestone as the first entrepreneurship training classes kicked off in Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, and Busia counties. The one-week training will be followed by two months of mentorship, giving young people the skills and guidance needed to translate their business ideas into reality.

Today marks the beginning of a journey that will transform lives. We are not just training youth, we are equipping them to be job creators, innovators, and changemakers,” said Wycliffe Oparanya the Co-operatives and MSMEs cabinet secretary.

Under Component 2 of the NYOTA project, 70 youth in every ward will receive start-up capital ranging from KSh 50,000 upwards, after completing both classroom training and mentorship. This phased disbursement is designed to ensure beneficiaries are not only funded but also fully prepared to run sustainable enterprises.

The project is anchored on four components: skills development and work placement, entrepreneurship and start-up support, promotion of savings through the NSSF’s Haba Haba scheme, and enhancing digital and financial systems to connect youth to broader opportunities.

By the end of the five years, NYOTA aims to create 110,000 youth entrepreneurs, certify 20,000 artisans through the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) initiative, skill and connect 90,000 youth to employment, and train 600,000 youth to access Government procurement opportunities.

The formal launch of NYOTA will take place in the coming weeks in Western Kenya, presided over by H.E. President William Ruto, coinciding with the commencement of start-up capital disbursement to the first group of trained beneficiaries.

The NYOTA project is about more than figures it is about hope, dignity, and empowerment for a generation of youth who have long been left behind,” Wycliffe Oparanya stated.

The government has assured Kenyans that the rollout plan is on schedule, with training and funding expected to spread quickly to all eight regional clusters.
