SOMALI AMBASSADOR TO KENYA URGES PEACE AND RESPECT AFTER FOOTBALL INCIDENTS, HAILS KENYA-SOMALIA TIES
The Somali Ambassador to Kenya, H.E. Jabril Ibrahim Abdulle, has called for calm, mutual respect, and the preservation of sportsmanship following incidents that overshadowed Mogadishu City Club’s recent match in Nairobi.
In a heartfelt address at the Somali Embassy on Wednesday, Ambassador Abdulle warmly welcomed Mogadishu City Club to the mission, describing their visit as a reflection of resilience and a testament to the strength of Somali sports. He praised the team’s presence in Kenya as a source of inspiration for countless young fans back home.
“We are deeply mindful of the unfortunate incidents that followed the recent match,” the Ambassador said. “We regret and firmly condemn the actions of a few individuals whose behavior overshadowed the remarkable performance of both teams. Such incidents do not reflect the values of respect, friendship, and shared sovereignty that guide the relationship between our two brotherly nations.”
Ambassador Abdulle noted that Somalia and Kenya’s relationship stands stronger than ever, driven by deepening cooperation in education, security, investment, and trade. He emphasized that sporting exchanges are not just competitions but also vital avenues for fostering mutual trust and advancing peace in the Horn of Africa.
“We continue to value the vital role Kenya plays in supporting Somalia’s progress and regional integration,” he added.
The Ambassador extended special commendation to Kenyan authorities for their professionalism during the tournament. He applauded the Kenya Police Service, the Kenya Police FC Administration, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF), and Sports Kenya for their role in ensuring the safety of players and fans at Nyayo National Stadium.
“We remain in close communication with Kenyan authorities to ensure that both teams and their supporters feel safe, respected, and supported as this tournament continues,” he assured.
Calling on communities to rise above division, Ambassador Abdulle stressed the power of football to unite people across borders.
“Football is more than a game it is a bridge of friendship, a unifier of peoples, and a reflection of African unity and sportsmanship,” he said. “Let us work collectively to preserve the true spirit of the game, ensuring it remains a source of harmony, dignity, and shared aspirations for a brighter and more prosperous future.”
As Mogadishu City Club continues its participation in the Nairobi tournament, the Somali Embassy reiterated its commitment to supporting the team and strengthening the bonds of friendship between Somalia and Kenya.
