The 4th Annual Lamu7s Rugby Tournament, organized by Waridi Foundation, took place over the weekend at Tiger Ground in Lamu County, bringing together sport, sustainability, and tourism in a celebration that attracted over 1,000 spectators.

The tournament, which had 12 registered teams, saw only four Lamu7s, Mpeketoni Girls Rugby Team, Young Cubs Mpeketoni, and Malindi Turtles compete after logistical challenges affected participation. Malindi Turtles continued their dominance, defeating Lamu7s 12–0 and retaining their title as the most successful team in the history of Waridi Foundation tournaments.

In a shift from previous years, organizers awarded all participating teams. The winners received Ksh. 20,000, while each of the other teams walked away with Ksh. 5,000 as a way of encouraging talent and participation.

Deputy Governor Dr. Mubarak, who attended the event, pledged to support rugby development in Lamu by providing equipment and jerseys for the clubs.

Hon. Ndegwa, Hon. Maguathi, and the Governor’s Chief Advisor also expressed their backing, assuring the players and organizers of continued county-level support for the sport.

The crowd was entertained by coast music legend Susumila, whose performance added vibrancy to the tournament and inspired the youth in attendance.

This year’s event coincided with World Tourism Day and emphasized the theme of Sustainable Tourism. Through the “Plant & Play” initiative, players and partners planted 5,000 mangroves along Lamu beaches, led a town clean-up exercise, and promoted the county’s eco-tourism sites, including Pangani Forest, Lake Kenyatta, and its birdlife diversity of more than 126 species.

Waridi Foundation founder and Women Representative aspirant, Waridi, highlighted the importance of blending sport with environmental conservation and tourism promotion.

“Lamu is a one-stop destination: from the island’s sandy beaches to the mainland’s wildlife and eco-tourism gems. Lamu7s blends sport, sustainability, and tourism to create opportunities for our youth,” she said.

Since its launch in 2017, when Waridi was crowned Miss Tourism Kenya Lamu County, the Lamu7s Rugby Tournament has grown into a platform for nurturing youth talent, empowering the community, and shining a spotlight on rugby as an underrepresented sport in the region.

Waridi Foundation’s Executive Director, Ms. Jenniffer, extended gratitude to partners including Green Pamoja Initiatives, Asali Mikoko, Pride of Lamu, White Label Entertainment, Ujamaa Group, and the Lamu Muslim Association, acknowledging their role in ensuring the success of the tournament.

With the combination of sport, sustainability, and tourism, the Lamu7s continues to strengthen its reputation as one of the county’s most impactful events, positioning Lamu as both a tourism hub and a rising rugby destination.
