The Jamia Mosque Committee has launched a landmark photo exhibition in celebration of 100 years of the mosque’s remarkable journey a century that has seen Jamia evolve into one of Kenya’s most influential religious and community institutions.
The exhibition, which opened today at the Multi-Purpose Hall and will run until October 30, showcases a rich collection of rare and archival photographs tracing Jamia’s transformation from its early establishment in the 1920s to its current role as a center of faith, education, and social service. The curated images tell the story of Jamia’s founders and the generations that followed individuals who built not just a mosque, but a lasting symbol of unity and devotion in the heart of Nairobi.
Through its carefully assembled displays, the exhibition highlights Jamia’s enduring contributions to Kenya’s spiritual and cultural landscape. From promoting religious education and charitable works to advancing civic engagement and social welfare, the mosque’s influence extends far beyond the Muslim community, shaping the moral and social development of the nation at large.
According to the Jamia Mosque Committee, the exhibition serves both as a reflection on the past and a vision for the future celebrating milestones, leadership, and the community spirit that has kept Jamia’s legacy alive for a century.
Speaking during the launch, Abdulbari Hamid, Secretary General of the Jamia Mosque Committee, described the exhibition as a tribute to the resilience and faith of the Muslim community in Kenya.
“This exhibition is both a celebration and a reminder of our roots,” said Hamid. “It honors those who came before us the pioneers who laid Jamia’s foundation and challenges us to continue building on their vision through service, knowledge, and compassion.”
He added that Jamia’s story mirrors Kenya’s own journey of growth, diversity, and unity.
“For a hundred years, Jamia Mosque has stood as a beacon of faith and an anchor of community life,” Hamid remarked. “Our mission of unity, education, and service remains just as vital today as it was a century ago. We are proud to see new generations taking up this mantle of leadership and responsibility.”
Members of the public are invited to attend the exhibition, which offers a rare opportunity to journey through Kenya’s religious and architectural history. Visitors will explore powerful visual narratives depicting Jamia’s spiritual and community impact, its architectural evolution, and its role in promoting interfaith harmony and social progress.
“As Jamia marks this centennial milestone, we remain deeply committed to strengthening our role as a house of worship, a center of learning, and a pillar of national unity,” Hamid concluded. “This exhibition reminds us that faith, when combined with service, continues to be a powerful force for positive change.”
