East Africa has taken a bold step toward redefining its transport future with the unveiling of the Road to Addis initiative at Ridge Cabin Resort in Tigoni. The launch brought together government officials, private sector leaders, and development partners in a show of unity for a movement that will test and prove the viability of electric mobility across the region.
The initiative will see a 1,600-kilometre fully electric convoy featuring two-wheelers, four-wheelers, and heavy-duty trucks travel from Nairobi to Addis Ababa, showcasing the practical potential of e-mobility for both people and goods.
Speaking at the launch, Lisa Amenya of Africa E-Mobility Week said the project was more than just about vehicles. “This is the start of a movement. The Road to Addis shows what is possible when we collaborate across borders to reimagine mobility. It is about jobs, trade, climate action, and giving communities a cleaner, better future.”
Munja Group CEO, Joseph Munja, noted that the initiative demonstrates Africa’s readiness to lead in technological solutions. “We are proving that electric transport is not only for developed markets it can work here, for everyone. From city boda riders to cross-border freight, clean energy is the new engine of growth.”
Kenya Power Managing Director, Eng. Joseph Siror, emphasized the role of energy providers: “Our commitment is to ensure reliable charging infrastructure in Kenya. Partnering with Ethiopia Electric Utility allows us to create a seamless e-mobility corridor that will benefit businesses and travelers alike.”
On the Ethiopian side, EEU’s Deputy CEO, Almaz Bekele, welcomed the collaboration: “The Road to Addis is a symbol of what regional cooperation can achieve. Together, we are building the backbone of Africa’s electric transport future.”
Private sector partners are also keen to showcase innovations. Kabisa Logistics Director, David Kabisa, said: “Our heavy-duty EV will demonstrate that long-distance electric freight is not a dream it is a reality that can transform logistics.”
Meanwhile, Spiro East Africa CEO, Ankur Agarwal, highlighted the everyday impact: “For millions of riders who depend on two-wheelers, shifting to electric is about saving costs and protecting the environment. Scalable solutions exist, and we are here to prove it.”
The convoy will officially flag off from Uhuru Park, Nairobi, on October 5, before making stops in Moyale, Yabello, Hawassa, Ziway, and Adama, and arriving in Addis Ababa on October 15. Along the journey, the team will meet communities, schools, and local leaders, capturing stories and insights that will feed into discussions during Africa E-Mobility Week 2025 on October 15–16.
Convened by Intro.Africa and Thought Leader Africa, and supported by the Africa E-Mobility Alliance, governments, embassies, and development partners, the Road to Addis is positioning East Africa as a pioneer in sustainable, collaborative mobility.
