Kenya has officially confirmed that it is fully ready to host the World Under-21 Taekwondo Championships, which will take place in Nairobi later this year. The international event will bring together more than 1,000 athletes, coaches, and officials from over 140 countries, making it one of the biggest global sporting events ever held in Kenya.
The announcement was made by the Kenya Taekwondo Federation (KTF) together with the Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy and Sports during the official unveiling of Team Kenya, made up of eight male and eight female athletes who will represent the country in the tournament.
The event will be held under the theme “Taekwondo Values For Climate Action,” which aims to show how sports can support environmental conservation and sustainability.
KTF President Major (Rtd) Suleiman Sumba said Kenya had met all requirements set by World Taekwondo, whose officials recently visited and inspected the facilities. They confirmed that the venues and systems are ready and meet international standards.
“Kenya is ready. Our athletes, venues, and support systems have all met global expectations,” said Major Sumba. “Hosting the world under the theme ‘Taekwondo Values For Climate Action’ shows that sport can inspire both excellence and care for the environment.”
He added that Team Kenya is currently in a high-performance residential training camp as part of their final preparations. The athletes are also set to travel to Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, to take part in the African Series Championships later this month, which will help them sharpen their skills ahead of the world event.
“Our team is in top shape and highly motivated. The experience in Abidjan will prepare them to defend home ground with confidence,” Sumba said.
The championship will attract top taekwondo nations such as South Korea, Brazil, Russia, Egypt, Nigeria, and South Africa, and is expected to boost Kenya’s image as a reliable host of international competitions.
Speaking on behalf of the Ministry, Principal Sports Officer Jackson Munywoki congratulated the KTF for its strong leadership and praised the inclusion of environmental sustainability as part of the event’s planning.
“This championship reflects Kenya’s growing reputation in international sport management,” Munywoki said. “It also shows the government’s commitment to using sport as a tool for youth empowerment, economic growth, and environmental conservation.”
According to KTF, final preparations are ongoing in key areas such as accreditation, athlete transportation, and venue setup. Security, accommodation, and coordination teams are also in place to ensure a smooth and successful event.
To support the carbon-neutral goal, the federation has partnered with the TBL (Tenants Become Landlords) Go Green Initiative, which will lead tree planting and green energy projects linked to the event. This will include planting 11,000 trees under the #KenyaYetuMsituWetu initiative, which contributes to Kenya’s national target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
TBL Director Jeff Kefa said the partnership aims to prove that sporting events can make a real contribution to protecting the environment.
“This event shows that sport can lead in the fight against climate change. Every match, every medal, and every participant will leave a positive mark on our planet,” said Kefa.
He added that sustainability will not just be a side activity, but a key part of the championship’s identity, influencing everything from energy use to community engagement.
The upcoming World Under-21 Taekwondo Championships are expected to bring economic benefits through tourism, local trade, and international exposure. Hotels, transport services, and small businesses in Nairobi are likely to gain from the influx of visitors during the event.
KTF encouraged Kenyans to support Team Kenya as they prepare to compete on home soil, promising that the championship will be a proud moment for the nation.
Media accreditation for both local and international journalists is now open for this historic global event.
