Former Nairobi Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has taken a major step in his political comeback after officially registering his new party.

On Tuesday morning, the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) handed Sonko the Certificate of Full Registration for the National Economic Development Party (NEDP). With this approval, the party can now field candidates, with plans already set to take part in the 2027 Nairobi County elections.

The party is expected to officially name Sonko as its leader in early 2026. In his remarks, Sonko described NEDP as a grassroots party, saying it is “a party for the people by the people that speaks to the needs of the common mwananchi.”

The successful registration marks an important moment for Sonko as he prepares for a political return. He says this is “the beginning of amazing possibilities that will change the Kenyan political landscape,” setting up a competitive race for Nairobi County in the 2027 General Election.
