Kenyans can expect steady and affordable electricity this festive season after Kenya Electricity Generating Company PLC (KenGen) announced strong hydropower production from its Seven Forks dams. This reliable output is helping keep electricity costs stable at a time when global energy prices are still unpredictable.
KenGen Managing Director and CEO, Eng. Peter Njenga, said the company’s hydropower stations are performing well and continue to support Kenya’s electricity supply.
“As of the morning of December 8, total hydro generation from the system stood at 473.14MW against an installed capacity of 600.4MW,”

He added that Kenyans should expect a stable power supply throughout the festive season and into the new year.
KenGen also shared dam level updates showing that all major reservoirs are operating safely.
-Masinga Dam recorded 1,054.49 meters (safe range: 1,037 to 1,056.50).
-Kamburu Dam stood at 1,005.04 meters.
-Gitaru at 923.18 meters.
-Kindaruma at 780.05 meters.
-Kiambere at 697.44 meters.

-Gitaru at 923.18 meters.
-Kindaruma at 780.05 meters.
-Kiambere at 697.44 meters.
All these dams remain above their minimum required levels, meaning they can continue producing power without interruption.
“These healthy water levels show that our water management program is working well, allowing us to generate power even during low rainfall,”

Hydropower is Kenya’s cheapest source of electricity, and the strong performance of KenGen’s dams helps reduce dependence on expensive thermal power. This protects households and businesses from sudden increases in electricity costs.
“Hydropower remains the backbone of affordable electricity in Kenya. The strong performance of our dams reflects good planning, responsible use of resources, and our long-term focus on energy security,”

KenGen said it will continue investing in activities like watershed protection, reforestation and climate-resilience projects to secure enough water in the future.
“As the world faces climate challenges and rising energy prices, Kenya continues to stand out. KenGen is ensuring stability today while building a clean and reliable energy future,”
