ONLY INTERNS ATTENDING TO PATIENTS AT MAMA LUCY HOSPITAL AS CLINICAL OFFICERS' STRIKE CONTINUES

The Kenya Union of Clinical Officers (KUCO) has raised concern over the state of healthcare at Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, saying only interns are currently attending to patients as the strike by clinical officers continues.
Speaking to the media after visiting the facility, KUCO Secretary General George Gibore said the absence of specialists and fully trained clinical officers has left patients at serious risk.
“At Mama Lucy Hospital today, patients are being attended to only by interns, with no specialists on duty,” Gibore said. “This situation is dangerous and exposes patients to serious risk.”
Gibore insisted that the union will not call off the strike until the government addresses their key demands, accusing the Ministry of Health of failing to act despite repeated engagements.
“The strike will continue until our issues are fully resolved,” he said. “We want the Ministry of Health to pay the 19 months’ arrears owed to Global Fund workers and to sign the Collective Bargaining Agreement without further delay.”
He said the unpaid arrears have pushed many healthcare workers into financial hardship, yet they continue to offer critical services under difficult conditions.
“Our members have worked for months without pay, yet they are expected to deliver lifesaving services,” Gibore said. “That is unfair and unacceptable.”
The union warned that public hospitals across the country could face more pressure if the standoff is not resolved soon, calling on the government to urgently intervene to prevent further suffering for patients.
Clinical officers across Kenya have been on strike over delayed payments, poor working conditions, and failure by the government to honour previous agreements, further straining an already stretched public healthcare system.
